Old Barns and Paraprosdokians

Good morning.   There is such appeal to old barns.    Love these pictures so thought I'd share.    When I lived in Carson City, Nevada years ago, I often had an opportunity to ride out into the valleys where there were old barns.    There was on particular one I thought was beautiful and painted it.   There was a huge cottonwood tree in front of it and some old farm machinery.     It was ancient, old and decrepit and beautiful.

I never heard the word Paraprosdokians before.   Something new, yet something old as I learned it is "Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected;  frequently used in a humorous situation."  "Where there is a will, I want to be in it." is a type of paraprosdokian.

Here are a few more to lighten your day and make you smile.

"If I agree with you we'd both be wrong."

"Evening news is where they begin by telling you "good evening," and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

"To steal from one person is plagiarism, to steal from many is research."

"Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut and still think they are sexy."

"A clear conscience is a sign of a fuzzy memory."

"Hospitality is making your guests feel at home even when you wish they were.

So today, think about making up a paraprosdokian all your own.     The last of your weekend which I hope you are finding delightful and fun.    The Harry Potter movie is playing and I hear it has rave reviews.    The sad news here was the Kite Festival was rained on.  It turned out to be a very wet weekend with misty rain and fog.    The Indian Casino, Lucky Seven, had a huge crowd to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary and put on a good free spread of chicken, roast beef, baked macaroni and cheese, baked beans, rolls, and cake for desert.   Pretty tasty and it was something to see every machine going full tilt.    You would never believe there was a problem with the economy or lack of jobs, but then, the clientele were mostly seniors on a fixed income squandering a few pennies and enjoying the day.  Did I play . . .yes!   Did I win . . . NO!   Did I have fun. . . yes . . . Did I stay long . . . no!  On the way we did stop at a yard sale, one Pat had been to earlier.  She was telling of an ancient trunk, one of the big old steamer trunks that had not been opened in years.   Some folks tried to pick the lock and even tried harsher methods to open it but it didn't work.  The current owner of the trunk said it had not been opened in years and she thought it had old glass pieces.   Pat wanted to go back to see if they finally got it opened and they had and the owner put the pieces away so they must have some value.    The trunk was sold immediately.  So there went Pat's dreams of a finding a treasure.  She did buy a box of almost new paper back novels.  There was not one author I knew. but many she was familiar with.    So keep your eyes open for a 'yard sale' sign and see if you can find a treasure today.   Make good use of your seconds.  Hugs to all.
